The Arts Foundation of New Zealand is a community of supporters and artists sharing in the richness of the arts now as well as contributing to future artistic achievement.

Artists are welcomed into this community as recipients of Awards. Supporters are welcomed to the Arts Foundation as financial members, donors, those that intend to leave a legacy and sponsors.

Artists are selected for awards based on their achievements without their knowing they are under consideration.  Their selection is made by panels or curators independent to Arts Foundation Trustees. To find out more about the Foundation’s ever-growing circle of artists click here.

Supporters assist the Foundation in growing a permanent endowment from which all income generated goes to the arts. The endowment is currently over $6 million with many more millions promised in legacies.

Supporters and artists come together at award ceremonies and other Arts Foundation events to explore the arts and learn from one another. If you would like to be part of this community, find out how here.

RECENT ANNOUNCEMENTS

Perpetual Partnership to honour patrons

The Arts Foundation welcomes Perpetual Trust to its family of sponsors. As a company with over 120 years experience in managing charitable trusts, Perpetual are an excellent Presenting Sponsor of the Arts Foundation of New Zealand Award for Patronage.

The Award for Patronage honours philanthropists whose commitments to the arts are significant. This year’s recipient is announced on 29 May at Government House, Wellington. As with previous years, the Foundation is providing the Award recipients with $20,000 to distribute to arts projects or artists of their choosing. At the Award ceremony we will learn how the recipients have chosen to distribute the donation. “Perpetual Trust is proud to be associated with the Arts Foundation and to be celebrating philanthropy”, said Louise Edwards, Chief Executive Officer, Perpetual Trust. “The Foundation is unique in that it honours both highest achievers in the arts and also those that are part of the arts community as supporters. The value placed in both parties reflects Perpetual’s commitment to helping people achieve their philanthropic aims whist providing real benefits to the community”.

Art, Film, Music Now: New Generation Artists Talk About Their Work

On Friday, 28 May 2008, the Arts Foundation of New Zealand embarked on a programme touring artists to three centres around New Zealand — Dunedin, Hamilton and Taranaki. Art, Film, Music Now: New Generation Artists Talk about Their Work. The first, in Dunedin featured visual artist Eve Armstrong, musician Warren Maxwell and stone artist Joe Sheehan. The programme enables these artists to present elements of their practise and reflect upon their creative processes. As Freemasons New Zealand are the Presenting Sponsor of the New Generation Awards, the discussion focusses on the use of symbolism in the artist’s work, considered alongside an exploration of Freemason symbology, presented by a Freemason representative.

Arts Foundation of New Zealand touring events illuminate the work of artists by providing insights into their life experiences and personal perspectives. It is this focus that makes the talks engaging for new audiences and those experienced in the arts. Previous events that feature Laureate Artists, such as Forsyth Barr Laureates On-Stage, have drawn audiences to follow the careers of featured artists also connecting them to other artists honoured by the Foundation.

The events provide the public an opportunity to learn about artistic processes and hear artists discuss their careers, and to enjoy examples of the artists’ works through both performance and display.

Places are limited at these events; if you would like to attend, email your interest to admin@artsfoundation.org.nz

The Marti Friedlander Photographic Award, supported by the Arts Foundation of New Zealand.

Edith Amituanai was announced by Marti Friedlander as the inaugural recipient of this new award at a ceremony held at the Auckland Art Gallery, on 28 November last year.

"The Arts Foundation of New Zealand is proud to form a partmership with Marti and Gerrard Friedlander to establish what may be the highest value award for a photographer within New Zealand" said Ros Burdon, Arts Foundation Chairman. "Through the eventual establishment of an endowment fund with the Foundation, we look forward to presenting this Award in perpetuity in Marti Friedlander's name; an appropriate acknowledgement for a great artist and a generous couple."

During Marti's lifetime, she will select the recipient of the Award, and this role will eventually be taken up by the Arts Foundation.
